Our Approach

To answer our research questions, we perform observational studies and randomized controlled trials, and use qualitative research methods. We thereby use state-of-the-art and novel measurements for physical activity and fitness, as well as research methodologies, including individual patient data meta-analyses, moderation and mediation analyses, and Bayesian adaptive trial designs.

We closely collaborate with clinicians and paramedics at university and community hospitals and local practices, and with translational and biomedical researchers.

Our achievements

Results from our studies have shown that:

  • Patients with cancer have low physical activity and fitness levels, which affect fatigue, toxicity, and quality of life.
  • Exercise has significant beneficial effects on physical fitness, fatigue and quality of life, but effects vary by patient and exercise characteristics, highlighting the need for personalized and targeted exercise programs.
  • Exercise effects on quality of life is mediated by improved fitness and subsequent fatigue reductions, and by improved self-concepts and coping.

We thank all patients who participate in our studies, and all collaborators from various institutes
